Drill of the Week - 10.21.2024

FYHP Coaches -

This has been a favorite drill of mine for a while now, because it involves so many skaters at once. We should always be mindful of trying to reduce the amount of "watching" or "downtime" in a drill. You have 6 forwards in two groups of three on the boards in a zone, and three defenders in the middle. The point of the game is for one group of forwards to move the puck around, and get it across to the other set of forwards on the other side of the ice. The defensive players do their best to break up the passes. There are many restrictions to put on this drill which increase or decrease the difficulty, based on your skill level (no saucer passes, have to make another pass on your side before crossing back, place a net along the lower board to prevent just rimming it around, etc). But this drill is great for teaching spacing and quick decisions for the forward players, and teaching spacing, communication, and attacking for the defensive group.
